Possible Air-Borne Toxin associated with Ghatanothoa

Ghatanothoa from Cthulhu Wars by Buttornado (www.deviantart.com)

In the revisionist tale “Out of the Aeons,” written by H.P. Lovecraft and Hazel Heald, a mummy with a strange scroll is housed in the Cabot Museum of Archaeology in Boston. It turns out the mummy is actually T’yog, a sorcerer from the lost continent of Mu and was a disciple of Shub-Niggurath.  However, most of the individuals on Mu worshiped an entity called Ghatanothoa.

It is stated in the Black Book or Nameless Cults by von Junzt that the Spawn of Yuggoth colonized the Earth before it harbored life. Thus, this means the Spawn of Yuggoth were present on Earth before the Elder Things, which put them on our planet sometime between the creation of the Earth, approximately 4.6 billion years ago, and 4.0 and 3.5 billion years ago, when the Elder Things first arrived. In addition, as noted by William Fulwiler (H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos by Robert M. Price; 1990), the Spawn of Yuggoth are not the Mi-Go.  As noted in “The Whisperer in Darkness” the Mi-Go arrived on Yuggoth (known to most as Pluto) from outside of our space-time and found, “… mighty cities on Yuggoth – great tiers of terraced towers built of black stone…” but with no occupants. More than likely the beings who built the black towers on Yuggoth also colonized Earth before the arrival of the Elder Things.

Price's Book
Price’s Book

According to von Junzt’s Black Book there was a gigantic fortress made of Cyclopean stone, one top of the “bleak basalt cliffs of Mount Yaddith-Gho…” in the ancient kingdom of K’naa. The Spawn of Yuggoth built the fortress and perished aeons before even the Elder Things arrived on Earth. However, before the Spawn of Yuggoth died they imprisoned an entity known as Ghatanothoa in crypts deep within the fortress. The entity is recorded to be an extremely abhorrent and horrible creature, so much so that looking upon it results in complete paralysis and petrifaction.  More specifically, “…the victim was turned to stone and leather on the outside, while the brain within remained perpetually alive – horribly fixed and prisoned through the ages, and maddeningly conscious of the passage of interminable epochs of helpless inaction till change and time might complete the decay of the petrified shell and leave it exposed to die.”

First of all, I hypothesize that the cause for this unique form of paralysis is not the mere sight of Ghatanothoa but some type of unknown airborne toxin. I will provide information to support this hypothesis in an upcoming article.  What I do want to discuss here is the possibility that the technology the Mi-Go use to store human (and other) brains in their cylinders may originate from the Spawn of Yuggoth.

In “The Whisperer in Darkness” it was documented that the Mi-Go can successfully extract a human brain from the body and store it, alive and intact, in an “ether-tight” cylinder composed of an alien metal mined on Yuggoth.  With some sensory instruments hooked up to the cylinder, the bodiless individual can be transported through our space-time and beyond by the Mi-Go. Originally it was thought that the strange metal cylinder was the technology responsible for keeping the brains alive and intact. However, it may not be the cylinder that keeps the brain alive but instead some substance or material that is within the brain cylinder. I hypothesize that when the Mi-Go arrived on Yuggoth, they found some ancient technology of the Spawn of Yuggoth, in addition to their windowless black towers. Specifically, the Spawn of Yuggoth may have mastered the ability to exact the brain from an individual entity and keep it alive indefinitely and this technology may have originated from Ghatanothoa.

Ghatanothoa by Michael Bukowski (www.yog-blogsoth.blogspot.com)

If an air-borne toxin from Ghatanothoa can keep a brain alive infinitely while paralyzing the body of the individual, a diluted or modified compound from the toxin may be used to keep a brain removed from its host body alive. The Mi-Go are known to be experts in surgery and body modification. This combined with the toxin generated by Ghatanothoa may have allowed them to prefect the ability to remove a brain from a body and keep it alive for extended periods of time. It seems to be too much of a coincidence that a human brain remains alive in a paralyzed body when exposed to Ghatanothoa and that the Mi-Go can place human brains into their strange cylinders while keeping them alive as well. The Mi-Go must have gleaned or utilized some of the Spawn of Yuggoth’s technology to develop their methodology of brain extraction and encasement, which must have involved the biology of Ghatanothoa in some way.

Next time we will discuss in more detail the nature and biology of Ghatanothoa and why I hypothesize that its ability to cause paralysis is an air-borne toxin and not by merely observing it. Thank you – Fred.

Notes from Yuggoth part 6 (mysterious dark blotches and lesser satellites)

Mi-Go by the King Ov Rats (www.deviantart.com)

It is going to take NASA weeks to months to receive all of the data from New Horizons and to process, analyze and interpret the received information. Thus, I will periodically post notes from Yuggoth over the next few months. However, for now this will be my last post from Yuggoth.

Some strange dark blotches and patterns, stretching hundreds of miles across, have been found on across the equator of Pluto. Curt Niebur, a program scientist for NASA, has said regarding this patterns, “It’s weird that they’re spaced so regularly.”  These patterns are on the side of Pluto always facing it’s largest moon Charon, which is tidally connected with the planet, similar to how the same face of our moon is always facing the  Earth. What are these patterns, hundreds of miles across? Are they vast farms of an alien lichen or bacteria that chemotrophically feed off the minerals of Pluto?

Details of the terrain of Pluto (www.nasa.gov)

In addition to the dark patterns, the most recent surveys of Pluto have identified mountains ranges and craters.  These mountains (shown below) are similar in size and scope to those of Appalachian Mountains; however, other mountains rages on Pluto were more similar to those of the Rocky Mountains.  Craters are also found among these mountains, filled with brighter material. These mountains and associated terrain are estimated to be billions of years old. Would a closer examination revealed large, basalt towers jutting out of the cliff faces of many of these mountains?

Mountain range of Pluto (www.nasa.gov)

The mountains are in sharp contrast to the light colored, planar, heart-shaped region, called the Tombaugh Regio, which is relatively fresh topography created within the last 100 million years. The contrast between the old maintains and the young, flat, heart-shaped region indicates that there is some degree of recent geologic activity.

The heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio of Pluto (www.nasa.gov)

In addition to the additional observation data on the terrain of Pluto, some new information has been collected on two of the smaller satellites of Pluto – Nix and Hydra. Nix is the smaller of the two and has a reddish bulls eye (possibly an impact crater), while Hydra is slightly larger and grey.

Nix and Hydra, two of the smaller moons of Pluto (www.nasa.gov)

There are a total of five known moons of Pluto with the other three being  Charon, Kerberos and Styx. Each moon may have a distinct purpose or function for the Mi-Go; however at this point in time nothing is known what these functions could be. One hypothesis is that each moon is an established gateway or portal to another part of the universe or perhaps even beyond our space-time. However, as additional information is received and analyzed by NASA, additional details may reveal the habits and operations of the Mi-Go. The real question is, will NASA release such information to the public?

Next time, before we continue with more discussions on the Lovecraftian solar system, we will discuss a Mi-Go related, revisionist tale “Out of the Aeons,” co-written with Hazel Heald.  Thank you – Fred.

Notes from Yuggoth part 5 (a depleting atmosphere)

Given the relatively small size of Pluto, it may seem unlikely that the dwarf planet has an atmosphere. However, the instruments on New Horizons have indeed detected a nitrogen-rich atmosphere as far as 1,000 miles above Pluto’s surface. It turns out that the dwarf planet’s atmosphere is being stripped away by the sun’s solar winds. A “tail” of cold, dense, ionized gas has been detected trailing 48,000 to 68,000 miles beyond Pluto.

Artist’s conception of solar winds striking Pluto’s atmosphere (www.nasa.gov)

The solar winds are a constant stream of electrically charged particles emitted by the sun in all directions. The average distance of Pluto from the sun is about 3.67 billion miles (approximately 39.5 astronomical units also known as AUs; Earth is approximately 1 AU from the sun). The solar winds hit Pluto and push its atmosphere into space, mostly composed of nitrogen ions. Ionized gas is created when energy (solar winds) slams into gas particles, stripping electrons off of atoms. In turn, this creates plasma, the fourth state of matter which is rare on Earth but is the most abundant form of matter in the Universe.

It has been hypothesized that Cthulhu itself is composed of an extra-dimensional form of plasma, a sort of alien ionized matter crammed into our 4-dimensional space-time. Such a hypothesize would explain the fluidity and strange shape / size changing abilities of Cthulhu as well as its “weakness” relative to existing in our space-time (e.g. imprisoned and asleep in R’lyeh in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean). Maybe additional investigations into Pluto’s atmosphere will contribute toward a better understanding of Cthulhu and many of the other Old Ones!

A size comparison among Pluto, Charon and Earth (www.nasa.gov)

As NASA scientists sift through the data and release photos of Pluto and Charon, some truly amazing facts are emerging from the kingdom of the Mi-Go. First, the large, bright heart-shaped feature near Pluto’s equator is a mountain range with peaks as high as 11,000 ft. Based on a geologic analysis of these mountains, they are more than likely relatively young, no more than 100 million years ago, which suggests that Pluto may be currently geologically active. Unlike some large moons in the solar system, like Europa, whose geologic activity is largely the result of gravitational interactions with their large parent planets, like Jupiter, Pluto has no such external source for its internal heat. Thus, some other process would be responsible for such geological activity.  Is it possible that mining or other unknown planet-based activities of the Mi-Go are responsible for this geologic activity or is there a more natural process in place?

The water-ice mountains of Pluto (www.nasa.gov)

Charon (possibly Kynarth?) has a fairly young surface, from a geological perspective, as well. Unlike our moon that is riddled with craters Charon surprisingly lacks such features, which is indicative of internal geological processes. More evidence for this includes the actual features that are present, such as cliffs and troughs that stretch approximately 600 miles across the moon’s surface. One canyon was identified to be between 4 to 6 miles deep. In addition, the north polar region of Charon has dark markings with a diffuse boundary, which may suggest a thin deposit or stain on the surface. Are these stains some type of strange alien crop, raised on the icy surface of Charon? Maybe the stain is some type of alien bacteria or lichen, entirely chemotrophic in nature, feeding of the minerals and inorganic compounds on the surface of Charon. Is Charon farmland for the Mi-Go? The Yuggoth system is strange indeed! Fred.

New Horizons

New Horizons path through the Pluto (or Yuggoth) system

As New Horizons approaches Pluto, one should not forget the dwarf planet’s largest moon Charon, which was discovered in 1978 at the United State Naval Observatory.  Charon is the largest of the five known moons of Pluto and is the largest moon relative to its parent body than any other moon in our solar system.  In fact, the barycenter (the center of mass of two bodies orbiting each other) of the Pluto / Charon system is outside of Pluto.

nhpf20150701_0278The Pluto / Charon System (www.nasa.gov)

While Charon was not discovered until the late 1970’s, Lovecraft may have had some knowledge of this satellite.  In “Through the Gates of the Silver Key” Randolph Carter mentions that he saw Kynarth and Yuggoth on the rim.  Since Carter mentions both of these bodies on the rim (referring to the rim of the solar system), and Yuggoth is Pluto, is it possible that Kynarth is Charon?

Some more details of Yuggoth’s moon Kynarth (also known as Charon)

S.T. Joshi hypothesizes that Kynarth may be a tenth planet in our solar system (Lovecraft and a World in Transition: Collected Essays on H.P. Lovecraft by S.T. Joshi, 2014) but since Kynarth and Yuggoth are mentioned together, I think it is more than likely that Kynarth is Charon.  Additionally, Joshi does cite that Lovecraft mentions in “The Haunter of the Dark” that Shaggai is apparently “more distant” than Yuggoth (Joshi, 2014).  Thus, I think Shaggai is the tenth planet, more than likely another dwarf planet, and Kynarth is Charon.

Tomorrow we should receive new photos of the Yuggoth – Kynarth system!

New Horizons probe (www.planetary.org) by Dan Durda, SwRI

With New Horizons being mere hours away from Yuggoth, more widely known as the dwarf-planet Pluto, I thought it would be a good time to discuss H.P. Lovecraft’s knowledge of this world.  First, as most know once the discovery of Pluto was officially made on 13 March 1930, Lovecraft correlated that this mysterious world was in fact Yuggoth, “rolling alone in the black aether at the rim…” of the solar system.  In fact in “The Whisperer in Darkness” Lovecraft mentions that the impostor of Henry W. Akeley states that he “…would not be surprised if astronomers become sufficiently sensitive to these thought-currents to discover Yuggoth when the Outer Ones wish them to do so.”

Clyde Tombaugh, a 24 year old astronomer who worked for the Lowell Observatory, discovered Pluto on 18 February 1930.  Tombaugh had no formal training as an astronomer; however, he had a skill for building telescopes.  As a farm boy from Kansas, Tombaugh use to build telescopes from old car parts and other “junk.” (National Geographic, July 2015).  Tombaugh was a very skilled and talented telescope maker and his hard work and persistence paid off in the discovery of Pluto.  However, it does make one think that maybe some Mi-Go “thought-currents” were sent his way in order to find Pluto.  The search for a planet beyond Neptune was underway in one form or another almost as soon as Neptune itself was discovered.  Thus, by the turn of the 20th century the race was on to discover “Planet X.”  Why was Pluto discovered in early 1930?

Clyde Tombaugh, discover of Yuggoth (better known as Pluto)

One hypothesis is that the Mi-Go were quite uncomfortable with humanity probing the solar system, particularly the outer rim.  Theoretical calculations, astronomical surveys and the eventual development of probes, sent into deep space to actually collect data on these worlds may have made the Mi-Go nervous.  Their outposts and cities were built on some of these worlds, including Pluto and its large moon Charon.

“There are mighty cities on Yuggoth – great tiers of terraced towers built of black stone…”

“The sun shines there no brighter than a star, but the beings need no light.  They have other subtler senses, and put no windows in their great house and temples.”

Thus, the Mi-Go may have thought that by appeasing the curiosity of the humans by allowing them to discover Pluto, further exploration into the outer rim and beyond may have ended or least would have been delayed.

Mi-Go, Concept 01 by Nathan Rosario (www.deviantart.com)

Other noted observations made by the impostor of Henry W. Akeley on Pluto included the presence of “black rivers of pitch that flow under those mysterious cyclopean bridges – things built by some elder race extinct and forgotten before the beings came to Yuggoth from the ultimate void..”  Thus, while the Mi-Go live on Yuggoth and use it as an outpost they did not construct the existing buildings and infrastructure.  No one knows who or what this elder race was.  Also, what is the black river of pitch?

Pitch is a thick, black, tar-like substance made by distilling coal tar.  There are a number of hypotheses about what New Horizons will find as it breezes past Pluto and one is that it may have a warm planetary core and be fairly dynamic from a geological sense.  It may have active geysers and be covered with frozen methane and other simple carbon-based compounds (National Geographic, July 2015).  Frozen nitrogen is probably present as well and Pluto more than likely has a thin atmosphere.  Maybe the geysers, other geological activity, and “the summer season” warms some of these pool or “canals” so the frozen methane becomes a liquid pitch that either eventually gases off into space or is re-frozen.  Incidentally a Plutonian year is about 250 years.  So one season can be longer than a human lifetime.

Finally, it should be noted that a small vial of Tombaugh’s ashes on on board of New Horizons, sort of our DNA-based ambassador to Pluto, the Kuiper belt and beyond.  If the Mi-Go obtain this vial of Tombaugh’s ashes, will they re-create the mind of this famous astronomer?  Will the consciousness of Tombaugh be confronted with those whose world he revealed to humanity?  Only Tombaugh will know.

Latest image of Pluto, 9th of July 2015

Over the next few weeks I will be dropping little bit of information about Pluto (although we all know its true name is Yuggoth).

“Among the structures tentatively identified in this new image are what appear to be polygonal features; a complex band of terrain stretching east-northeast across the planet, approximately 1,000 miles long …” said New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern. “After nine and a half years in flight, Pluto is well worth the wait.”

This is the latest from NASA, a photo taken by New Horizons on July 9, 2015 approximately from 3.3 million miles (5.4 million kilometers) away from the dwarf planet, with a resolution of 17 miles (27 kilometers) per pixel.

In “Out of the Aeons” by H.P. Lovecraft and Hazel Heald, there was an ancient land or province on Earth called K’naa where the first people found monstrous ruins left by those who dwelt there long ago.  The ruins were the bleak basalt cliffs of Mount Yaddith-Gho and one top of those cliffs was “a gigantic fortress of Cyclopean stone, infinitely older than mankind and built by the alien spawn of the dark planet Yuggoth, which had colonised the earth before the birth of terrestrial life.”  Is this 1,000 polygonal feature one of the fortresses of the Mi-Go?  We shall see!

Meteors and Meteorites in the Lovecraftian Solar System

H.P. Lovecraft’s love for astronomy is well known and from 1903 to 1914 he wrote numerous articles on the subject.  He did keep an astronomical notebook where he recorded, although somewhat inconsistently, a variety of astronomical phenomenon and occurrences (Joshi, 2013).  The notebook is approximately 100 pages long and one of its identified objectives was “To keep track of all celestial phenomena month by month, as positions of planets, phases of moon, Sign of Sun, occultations, Meteor Showers, unusual phenomena (record) also new discoveries.” (Joshi, 2013).

In several of Lovecraft’s astronomical articles he describes meteors as “small particles of matter revolving around the sun, that fall to the earth, attracted to it. Sometimes they move in companies, in which case a shower results upon their descent to the earth. A continuous belt of meteors, meeting the earth the 14th of every November, is thus called the Leonid shower” – from the Pawtuxet Valley Gleaner, 9 November 1906 (Joshi, 2004). Lovecraft also noted the meteor showers that are frequently observed in August (the Perseid Meteor Showers), which occur when the earth intersects a thick belt of these bodies in space as it orbits the sun (Joshi, 2004). He also noted that some are consumed before they hit the earth (burned up in the atmosphere) while others descend to the surface as aerolites, or meteoric stones. Aerolite is another name for a meteorite but it typically refers to meteorites composed chiefly of silicates. Today we simply call any meteor that hits the earth a meteorite. Another interesting statement Lovecraft makes about meteors and meteorites is that they “are the only celestial bodies which may be actually touched by human hands” (Joshi, 2004). Obviously, this thought had a big impact on Lovecraft as he documented the events at the Gardner farm in “The Colour Out of Space.”

Perseid Meteor Showers (www.spaceref.com)

Lovecraft also reported on the composition of meteorites in his astronomical writings. Specifically, he mentions that based on chemical analysis meteorites are either rocky matter or composed of pure metals such as iron and nickel. Additionally, many have pores that are frequently filled with inert helium, one of the most abundant elements in the universe (Joshi, 2004). Again, the solid, rocky meteorite, with pores that are filled with a gaseous substance is very reminiscent of the meteorite that fell on the Gardner farm in “The Colour Out of Space.”

“The Colour Out of Space” was written in 1927 and was covered in detail in a series of articles on this blog site earlier in the year. Thus, this tale will not be covered in this article. Instead other Lovecraft tales that mention meteors or meteorite will be reviewed. One of the first of his tales that mentions a meteorite is “The Green Meadow” co-written with Winifred V. Jackson, which was written in 1918-19. Thus, “The Green Meadow” precedes “The Colour Out of Space” by 8-9 years.

Winifred V. Jackson (www.miskatonicbooks.wordpress.com)

In “The Green Meadow” a meteorite falls into the sea just off Potowonket Maine in the evening of August 27, 1913 and the next day a fishing party retrieves the meteorite. It was a mass of metallic rock approximately 36 pounds and looked like a piece of slag. What was remarkable about the meteorite is that as samples were chipped off, it broke open and a small book bound in a semi-metallic substance was found. This material was unbreakable and no chemical regent appeared to impact it. The pages were light in color and extremely thin and most remarkable was that the writing in the book was “Greek of the purest classical quality.”

Essentially the book is a description of a person who finds himself or herself on a peninsula, not sure how they got there; the peninsula breaks off and floats down a river. The narrator sees a green meadow in the distance and as they approach the meadow he (or she) hears weird singing. After that, the narrator has some type of apocalyptic revelation – “therein was revealed the hideous solution of all which had puzzled me.” Unfortunately, after that the text is illegible (S.T. Joshi and D.E. Schultz. 2001. An H.P. Lovecraft Encyclopedia).

According to Lovecraft, the narrator is actually an ancient Greek philosopher who escaped the earth and landed on another planet (Joshi and Schultz, 2001). Based on this revealing piece of information, did the unknown Greek philosopher use the book and meteor as a sort of message in a bottle?  Was it a way of sending a note into the audient void?  If that is the case, what does this message mean?

There are a number of hypotheses that may explain this strange case and most of them are associated with the philosopher not being on earth.  The first is maybe this philosopher ended up receiving and using knowledge of inter-dimensional travel, given to him by Nyarlathotep.  The Greek may have gone down the same path of knowledge as Keziah Mason and Walter Gilman and is trapped on an alien world.

An alternative hypothesis is that Greek may be in the body of one of the Cone-Shaped Beings of the Great Race.  There was no description of what the philosopher’s body looked like so his mind may be in the body of a Cone-Shaped being.  Still another hypothesis is maybe this was some type of recording or documentation of a human mind being surgically prepared and placed into a Mi-Go brain container.  The apocalyptic revelation may be the realization that the individual’s mind may no longer be in his or her body.

H.P. Lovecraft-ish interdimensional creature eating a rocket (www.onegraydot.com)

Going back to the book itself, the tale may be a representation of someone traveling from the known to the unknown with the journey ending with some type of cosmic revelation.  Does the tale record an actual occurrence or is it supposed to represent something in a more symbolic manner? Was the illegible handwriting at the end of the tale an attempt to record something that the human mind cannot comprehend?  This story is awash in questions but one thing is for certain; the meteor came from a different time and a different place and was used in an attempt to communicate with human civilization.

Next time we will review other Lovecraftian stories that cite meteors.  Thank you – Fred.

Lovecraftian Solar System, Part II: Comets in Lovecraft’s Tales

Comet of 1811 (www.gutenberg.org)

In his astronomical writings, H.P. Lovecraft cited a number of instances where he observed comets.  For example, the first comet Lovecraft observed was Borelli’s Comet in August 1903.  However, beyond is articles on astronomy, Lovecraft mentions comets a number of times in his tales.  The first time was, appropriately enough, in “The Call of Cthulhu.”

Cthulhu recombining at the end of “The Call of Cthulhu (for beginning readers) by Dr. Fraustusau (www.deviantart.com)

It was toward the end of the tale after Johansen’s confrontation with Cthulhu itself.  After Johansen intentionally hits Cthulhu with the bowsprit of the vessel the Alert, causing the thing to explode, recombine and sink back down into R’lyeh, he experiences a cloudy consciousness during a subsequent storm.  At that time Johansen had a “…sense of spectral whirling through liquid gulfs of infinity, of dizzying rides through reeling universes on a comets tale, and of hysterical plunges from the pit of the moon and from the moon back again to the pit, all livened by a cachinnating chorus of the distorted, hilarious elder gods and the green, bat-winged mocking imps of Tartarus.”  That’s quite a statement!  However, Lovecraft’s point was that one way of traveling into the unknown void of the universes is on a comet’s tail.  This makes sense since in Lovecraft’s astronomical writings on comets he mentions a class of comets called solitary comets that appear from deep space and return back into the void never to be seen again.  I think this traveling on a comet’s tail is to convey this sense of experiencing something truly strange and unique in our universe, never to be seen by that individual ever again.

A bat-winged imp from Tartarus by Les Edwards(www.lesedwards.com)

The next time a comet is mentioned is in The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath.  In it Randolph Carter enters an alternative reality or parallel universe through his dreams.  While the “dreamlands” are very similar to Earth in general appearance, there are some substantial differences relative to physical laws.  For example, the dreamlands are a flat world and not a sphere like Earth.  Also, galley ships can travel to the edge of the dreamlands and float to the moon, which can sustain life.  In the tale Carter watches in horror as the ship he is on heads toward the edge of the world ready to plunge into the dark depths of the universe.  However, with a “queer whistle” the ship “shot silent and comet-like into planetary space.”  Here the reference to a comet may represent something unexpected and surprising, as many comets were before they were known what they were.

Sail to the Moon by Sycen (www.deviantart.com)

Toward the end of The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath comets are once again cited.  Here is was when Carter realizes that his quest for Kadath was his attempt to find the city he always loved and missed, particularly in the days of his youth – Boston.  Here, by the orders of Nyarlathotep a Shantak carries Carter through time, space and outside until, “Matter and light were born anew as space once had known them; and comets, suns and worlds sprang flaming into life, though nothing survived to tell that they had been gone, been and gone, always and always, back to no first beginning.”  This may indicate that Carter was transported to other dimensions, realities or branes, where time has no meaning.  Thus, Carter experiences the beginning and end of those universes.  Once again, comets are specifically cited as a component of universes, familiar or strange, that would be clearly recognizable by humans.  Additionally, this may be an indirect reference to the importance of comets as a means of transporting important organic molecules or water to worlds throughout the universe to provide the “seeds” of life.

In an even more incredible adventure, “Through the Gates of the Silver Key” (co-written with E. Hoffmann Price), Randolph Carter experiences at one point of the tale “phasing” into and out of the bodies of various entities both within and out of our space-time.  At one point, one of these entities was described as “…a vegetable brain of the future on a dark radio-active comet of inconceivable orbit…” Again, the inconceivable orbit expresses the fact that even periodic comets have orbits of such incredibly long distances that they may seem to be solitary in nature, particularly to a culture where the majority of the people are not familiar with the documentation of comets that pass by their world once ever tens or hundreds of years. In addition, the “vegetable brain” may be yet another reference to the fact that comets may have brought the simple organic compounds (or organic life?), the basic building blocks of life, to Earth. Indeed, many scientists hypothesize that radioactive heating within a comet may allow water to exist in a liquid state and thus harbor the organic molecules needed to seed new worlds for the eventual development of prokaryotic life.

Through the Gates of the Silver Key by Orbituated (www.deviantart.com)

On 13 June 2015 Philae, a robotic lab from Europe that was transported to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko by the Rosetta probe, woke up and made contact with Earth.  Since then it has contacted Earth two more times and just started to transmit data back to Earth. Eventually the robot will drill into the comet itself and collect samples for analysis.  One of the main goals of this mission is to determine if liquid water can be found inside of the comet along with organic molecules.  The next few weeks to months should provide some tantalizing data on the comet’s role in the origins of our Solar System.  However, it is interesting to note that Randolph Carter’s journey through the Gates of Silver Key may have been the first documentation that comets provide a safe habitat for the molecules of life from the cold vastness of interstellar space through radioactive heating.

Next time we will discuss meteors and meteorites in the Lovecraftian Solar System.  Thank you – Fred.
